Grammatical issues in which Al-Damāmīni disagreed with the grammarians in his explanation of Al-Mazaj
Abstract
This research addresses the grammatical disagreements among grammarians, a phenomenon whose roots extend back to ancient times, as seen in the emergence of grammatical schools, and continues to the present day. Linguists have approached various linguistic issues from multifaceted perspectives and possibilities, as grammatical disputes reflect the thought of one scholar or another. Hence, differences and disagreements arose in judging a single issue, adding another layer of value and a deeper understanding of the intricacies of language. This, in turn, influenced the evolution and diversity of linguistic thinking, enhancing the linguist's capacity for intellectual creativity and innovation in understanding language.
Creativity and mastery in grammatical disagreement are clearly evident in the methods grammarians employ to explore and comprehend language in its finest details, utilizing it to interpret and understand Quranic texts, noble Prophetic hadiths, Arabic poetry, and the sayings of Arabs. This has contributed to the enrichment and development of the language, thereby preserving it.
Many grammarians have distinguished themselves in this field, among them the eminent scholar Badr al-Din al-Damamini, a grammarian and linguist of the 9th century AH. He made numerous contributions across various disciplines, including grammar, hadith, rhetoric, language, prosody, and literature. We have selected his book, Sharh al-Mazj fi Sharh Mughni al-Labib li Ibn Hisham, as the subject of our study due to its richness in grammatical opinions, its inclusion of diverse linguistic issues and topics, its various grammatical examples, and its wide range of sources. Additionally, it contains differences in grammatical opinions between al-Damamini and other grammarians across different eras.
