The study examines the functional theory of translation to see how translators could use the skopos theory in translating political texts. It highlights the mistranslations and the translation problems caused by cultural, political and linguistic differences. It attempts to provide some appropriate renditions for some political expressions. Furthermore, the study refers to the strategies used by translators in dealing with these expressions. This study concentrates on one of them – translating political language. The study is based on the Arabic translation of English texts concern of news headlines. The main statement encountered in the translation of this text is; what is the translation supposed to achieve in this particular case? and how does the skopos theory fit in translating political language?
