Transforming the media from a tool in the hands of the ruler to a tool for empowering citizens
Abstract
This paper examines the transformation of the media in the Arab world during the so-called Arab Spring, from being a tool in the hands of ruling regimes to a means of empowering the people. This paper examines the changing roles of traditional and new media, and presents examples of how media were used to stimulate social movements and influence public policy. The role played by social media in organizing and directing revolutions is analyzed, as well as the challenges faced by independent media after the Arab Spring.
