الملخص

The heritage and archaeological sites in the city of Bani Walid vary, including local, Roman, Christian, and Islamic antiquities. All of these heritage and archaeological sites are exposed to numerous threats that threaten their disappearance and obliteration.  The sources of these hazards are either natural or human-made. Human-made hazards include encroachments on these sites by local residents, who tamper with or exploit them in ways that damage their structure. They may even completely demolish some of these sites, exploiting their proximity to residential areas. They cite the pretext of limited space and a desire for urban expansion, a reality that has been present in Bani Walid since the beginning of the last millennium. Natural hazards appear less harmful than their predecessors, as they are characterized by damage from erosion, rain, wind, and plant growth within these buildings, which can lead to cracking of their walls. This has made them vulnerable to neglect and deterioration.  As for the role of the local community in preserving these heritage and archaeological sites, it can only be achieved by emphasizing and promoting the role of relevant stakeholders within this community, by spreading awareness and collective responsibility regarding the importance of this cultural heritage and its value to society. This momentum must begin with academic and scientific institutions, civil society organizations, and non-governmental organizations, not to mention the key role of relevant institutions, whether the Antiquities Authority or the Historic Cities Protection Authority, as well as enforcement agencies such as the Tourist Police and some other security agencies.

The truth is that this work can only be achieved through the combined efforts of these components to raise awareness of the importance of heritage and archaeological sites and appreciate their role in preserving national identity. This can only be achieved by instilling this idea and value in the mindset of ordinary local citizens.
