Abstract

This study aims to examine the phenomenon of virtual stigma in cyberspace in light of the social stigma theory, focusing on analyzing the theoretical and social frameworks that explain how negative identities are attributed to individuals through digital media and their impact on their reputation and social standing. The importance of the study arises from the prevalence of harmful digital behaviors such as defamation, cyber bullying, and online blackmail, which reflect the evolution of traditional social stigma into a faster and more dangerous virtual form, affecting users’ sense of belonging and dignity. The study relies on a descriptive-analytical approach through reviewing theoretical literature related to social stigma and digital stigma. The results indicate that virtual stigma leads victims to experience shame, disgrace, fear of exposure, and social withdrawal, and may push some to internalize the stigmatized identity. It can also lead to secondary deviance due to digital marginalization and affects all age groups and social classes. The study recommends raising users’ awareness of the dangers of sharing offensive content, developing strict legal frameworks to protect victims from digital defamation and blackmail, providing psychological and social support, and implementing educational programs to promote a positive digital reputation and encourage respectful and cooperative behavior in cyberspace, aiming to mitigate the effects of virtual stigma on individuals and the digital community.
